Popular open source web browser firm The Mozilla Foundation, have been forced to rename their browser.

Known to most people as Firebird, this is the second time they’ve been forced to rename it.

The browser started life going under the name Phoenix, but Mozilla were forced to rename it to Firebird due to trademark implications.

Well, they’re doing it all over again now.

Firebird has now become Firefox.

Even the Firefox name was being doubted though, as a firm in the UK had already registered it as a trademark.

The Firebird name caused trademark difficulties with the open source database project of the same name.

Mozilla tried to avoid renaming Firebird by offering to call it “Mozilla Firebird“, but it wasn’t enough. They eventually gave into peer pressure and agreed to rename their browser to Firefox.

Mitchell Baker, President of The Mozilla Foundation said,

We are pleased to release a new preview version of Mozilla Firefox. To avoid overlap with another open source project, we have decided to change the name of this product from Mozilla Firebird to Mozilla Firefox.

Even the Firefox name was being doubted though, as a firm in the UK had already registered it as a trademark.
