Open-Source Alternative To MS Word

Okay, so you don’t need an entire office suite (OpenOffice.org), just the word processor.

Well, AbiWord is for you. It is open-source and cross-platform.

As a bonus, it supports several different types of documents, including Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, WordPerfect, HTML, and trusty ol’ RTF.

I tried AbiWord and used it for months until I started writing longer essays for my college classes. I remember that if my essay got to be more than 10 pages of text, the scrolling up and down through the document got really choppy and laggy. Sometimes it looked like huge chunks of text would disappear. But after switching to OpenOffice’s writer, things have been running smoothly.
